Ruddigore, or the Witch's Curse

Kanen’s past appearances for Opera Queensland include Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, Nadir in The Pearlfishers, Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Andy Warhol in The Perfect American and, most recently, the 2016 Brisbane Festival season of Snow White.

He is best known for his extensive appearances as a contracted artist at Opera Australia singing such roles as Camille in The Merry Widow, Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore, Marco Palmieri in The Gondoliers and Nanki-Poo, Caius in Falstaff, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Monostatos in The Magic Flute, Andres/Cochenille/Pittichinaccio/Frantz/Nathanael in The Tales Of Hoffmann, Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, Albert Herring, Johnny in Bliss at the Edinburgh Festival and The Scientist in Kate Miller-Heidke’s The Rabbits at the Perth, Melbourne and Sydney festivals.

His engagements for Victorian Opera include the roles of Tweedledee, The White King and Violet in Through The Looking Glass, The Beadle in Sweeney Todd, the 2016 premiere of Banquet Of Secrets and the 2017 premiere of ’Tis Pity.

Kanen appeared as Other roles include Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway and as the Witch Of Endor in the Glyndebourne Festival Opera production of Handel’s Saul at the 2017 Adelaide Festival.
