Directed by Patrick Nolan, Reprise is OperaQ’s response to GOMA’s remarkable exhibition of images by Gerhard Richter, one of the world’s great visual artists. Taking our cue from Richter’s ongoing investigation into the nature of the visual image we are looking at the history of song, with a particular focus on the German tradition. Starting with Bach, with whom Richter has a special relationship, audiences will encounter some of the most sublime German songs ever written in works by Schubert, Richard Strauss and Henze. In celebrating the past, we also want to look to the future and for this event have commissioned Paul Grabowsky to write a set of songs in response to the exhibition. These will have their world première on the night of Reprise, and we invite audiences to be part of a unique moment in time, as they share the experience of hearing new music, composed especially for the exhibition.
The evening will combine the enjoyment of fine wines, delicious canapés, exceptional performances and entry into an exhibition by one of the world’s most influential living painters.
