In the lead up to Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse! it’s important to brush up on your Victorian etiquette. Here are some of our favourites:

  • A single woman should never walk out alone. Her chaperone should be older and preferably married.
  •  A young lady should shine in the art of conversation, but not too brightly. Concentrate on the voice rather than the content of speech and cultivate a distinct but subdued tone.
  • Gentlemen should be seen and not smelled. They should use but very little perfume, as too much of it is in bad taste.
  •  A lady, should she be home, is expected to be properly dressed and ready to receive visitors between the hours of 3 and 5pm.
  • A gentleman desiring a lady to accompany him to the opera must send her a written invitation and it must be written in the third person, upon white note-paper of the finest quality, with an envelope to match.
  • A gentleman must wait for a lady to recognise him before lifting his hat and must use the hand farthest from her.
