Opera Queensland is excited to announce that one of Australia’s best-loved sopranos, Amelia Farrugia, will join the cast of Candide to sing the role of Cunegonde for which Rachelle Durkin had originally been contracted. Rachelle has asked to withdraw from the role as she is pregnant with her baby due in the Candide rehearsal period this June.
Artistic Director Lindy Hume said the company’s best wishes are with Rachelle.
“Everyone at OperaQ sends their love and congratulations to Rachelle during this exciting time. We have been fortunate that Amelia is available to perform Cunegonde, a role which will suit her perfectly! Amelia and I have worked together many times and I’m excited that she, together with David Hobson, Bryan Probets and Christine Johnson, will join us to bring to life this incredible Leonard Bernstein piece, one of my personal favourites.”
Since her opera debut in 1994, Amelia has sung many leading roles for Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, the State Opera of South Australia, appeared with all the ABC Orchestras and is now a regular on the roster at The Metropolitan Opera, New York, where she is currently understudying Renee Fleming and Diana Damrau.
