Robert graduated with a BA from The University of Sydney and a Diploma of Dramatic Art in Design from NIDA.
Since then he has designed over 70 productions for Australia’s major theatre and opera companies, including Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre, State Theatre Company of South Australia, Melbourne Theatre Company, Griffin Theatre Company, Black Swan, Australian Theatre For Young People, Belvoir and Opera Australia. He is the recipient of a Sydney Theatre Critics Award and a Matilda Award.
In Brisbane Robert has worked extensively for The Queensland Theatre Company, designing over many years Moby Dick, Xpo – The Human Factor, The Skin of Our Teeth, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Dirt, Buried Child, The Tragedy of King Richard II, Bag O’Marbles, The Tragedy of King Richard III, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, The Messiah, We Were Dancing, Phedra,The Cherry Orchard, The Venetian Twins, The Goat, Oedipus the King, Away, The Woman Before, Private Lives, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Anatomy Titus the Fall of Rome, The Importance of Being Earnest, God of Carnage, The Crucible, Let the Sunshine and No Man’s Land.
His work for opera includes set and costume designs for Opera Australia’s Iphigenie en Tauride, The Abduction From the Seraglio, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, The Pearlfishers and The Marriage of Figaro.
