Richard Roberts is a set and costume designer for theatre, opera, dance, television and film.
Richard’s recent designs for opera include Rigoletto and Don Pasquale for Opera Australia; Nixon in China, The Magic Flute, Baroque Triple Bill and The Marriage of Figaro for Victorian Opera; The Magic Flute and Die Fledermaus for West Australian Opera/Opera Australia; and Rigoletto for New Zealand Opera.
For ballet, Richard has designed sets for West Australian Ballet’s productions of La Sylphide and La Fille mal gardée and Raymonda for The Australia Ballet.
Richard’s recent theatre work includes Fiddler on the Roof directed by Roger Hodgman; The Caucasian Chalk Circle and Glengarry Glen Ross for Black Swan; Much Ado About Nothing for Queensland Theatre; Australia Day for Melbourne Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company; True West and Riflemind for Sydney Theatre Company; Last Man Standing, Solomon and Marion, Next to Normal, The Gift and Frost/Nixon for Melbourne Theatre Company; The Sapphires for Belvoir/Black Swan; and Managing Carmen and Tartuffe for Queensland Theatre/Black Swan.
For the screen Richard designed George Ogilvie’s ‘The Battlers’ for Seven Network, the series ‘Five Times Dizzy’ for SBS and ‘I Own the Racecourse’ for Barron Films.
He has held positions as Head of Design at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Head of Production at Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Head of Design at Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. He is currently Associate Professor at the School of Production at VCA.
In 2017, Richard designs The Season for Sydney Festival and Melbourne Festival; Noises Off! for Queensland Theatre/ Melbourne Theatre Company; Ruddigore, or The Witch’s Curse! for Opera Queensland; La Fille mal gardée for Queensland Ballet; and sets for Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera.
